Styles and Levels

Yoga Moves offers a number of different styles of yoga and a number of different levels. Many people ask us what type of yoga to start with…the most important thing to consider is the level of the class. Most of our beginner’s classes will give a similar foundation to yoga practice and are complementary to one another.

If you are new to yoga start with our Yoga Basics Classes.

If you have a firm ground in the foundational poses take Beginners Welcome classes.

Do you have a steady yogapractice and want to deepen further? Go to our Mixed Level classes.

The Ashtanga approach is composed of energetic series of asanas linked to the breath in a “moving meditation”. Often referred to as the original  'power' yoga, Ashtanga uses sun salutations to build heat and detoxify the body and then moves through a series of asanas designed to heat, clean, open and purify the body and mind. Yoga Moves teachers will modify the Primary Series in the beginners or all levels classes but it follows the main line of the primary series sequence.

In the full primary series classes the teacher will guide you through the full series of 72 poses. This class will take a little longer and some some previous experience (6-12 months) with Ashtanga Yoga is needed. Leave your yoga at home and explore teh full flow.

Yoga Moves also offers traditional Mysore classes in which each person goes through the set sequence of poses at his or her individual pace, in harmony with the rhythm of their own breath. Working independently of a teacher’s instruction allows the practitioner to shift their focus within, resulting in a practice that is dynamic and meditatively still at the same time. Moreover the teacher will take your deeper into the practice with hand on adjustments and one- on - one personal coaching.

Iyengar yoga is a yoga style where the practice of asanas is considered the starting point of a spiritual practice. Much attention is placed on correct alignment in asanas in order to develop strength, stamina, flexibility and balance, as well as concentration and meditation. It aims to unite the body, mind and spirit for health and well-being. This discipline is considered a powerful tool to relieve the stresses of modern-day life, which in turn can help promote total physical and spiritual well-being.

A 50 minute Yoga class to let go of the morning busyness. We also do a few gentle Yoga poses to move the body and re-energise and calm you at the same time. Of course there is also time for a Savasana at the end of class. This class will feel like one long meditation that will calm your body, mind and heart.

In this weekly Mindfulness Meditation and Yin Yoga class we will practice Shamatha (Peaceful Abiding) and Yin Yoga. The purpose of this class will be to provide confidence in your practice of meditation and yin yoga so that it can become a part of your daily life. Each class will consist of a short talk on the view of meditation, guided meditation, silent meditation and yin yoga.

What is Yin Yoga? It is a quiet, slow and stationary practice with a sense of core softness and surrender. Yin yoga cultivates an attitude of non-striving and emphasizes ‘being’ rather than ‘doing’. It is a complement to other forms of active yoga. The yoga poses are held from 3 to 5 minutes and therefore it works close to the bones on the connective tissue which is where the chi flows. Chi is our life force energy. The classes will be taught in English.

Yoga Moves Pilates classes tone up the torso like no other discipline. The abs, hips, buttocks and lower back work together as the body's "powerhouse", and all other movements are generated from this area outward. Pilates movements challenge the deeper, often neglected abdominal muscles, creating an amazingly strong core. The “plus” refers to the fact that our classes always include some yoga stretches.

If you are searching for other ways to tone and build core conditioning, also consider trying power vinyasa classes at Yoga Moves.

Asanas emphasize deep  inner work while conditioning the physical body. The body changes and develops over time. Initially the effort is hard and gradually it is refined. An inner and sincere effort joined with surrendering to the experience will lead to increased awareness. Ultimately asana, as the Yoga Sutras defines it, becomes steady and comfortable. Relaxation comes and meditation occurs, leading us to the higher goal of yoga. Work and development of the breath is essential to this process, both while doing asana and as a practice of itself.
Pranayama works with the breath ultimately clears the nervous system, balancing of subtle energy patterns and removes impurities. It is essential to practice. This technique is used as a therapeutic/ healing practice and for the spirit development. This class is presented in its traditional format, directly from a lineage that dates back generations. It provides a steady, safe opening for students and gives stability and clarity in the physical and mental realms. It is recommended that students have some experience in Yoga Asana and/or seated Meditation practice before beginning Pranayama.

Yoga Moves Slow Flow Vinyasa yoga class is the natural result of a long exploration of what feels good and is developed by Hilary Menting.  Yoga Moves Slow Flow balances the yang quality of a slow vinyasa (= breath and movement are connected) flow with the yin qualities of longer holds, restoratives, deep relaxation and meditation. We follow a traditional flow of asanas, hold longer, have more stillness in-between and work with more sitting and ground-based postures. Beginners welcome, but everyone who wants a quieter,  practice can enjoy. (be prepared however to work a little!)

This class is full with corrective, strengthening and lengthening excercises from the Iyengar Yoga system for the back.Suited for everybody who wishes to improve that region or has (regular) backpain or is interested to learn more about their own backs and understand the principle of a healthy back in general for teaching purposes. Previous yoga experience is not necesary and beinners are welcome.

A vigorous, dynamic style which links breath and movement through a heat building sequence of postures that build awareness, depth and meditative flow. Vinyasa means to flow, to stay awake, to be connected to the circular nature of things. These classes can be slow, strong and thoughtful or sometimes very demanding with a stronger pace.

These special women's yoga classes aim at women's needs related to reproductive and pelvic health. Well Woman Yoga essentially relaxes us and allows us to open our hearts, allowing energy to flow and communication to develop from this flow. Classes are restorative and include breath awareness and the aim of creating suppleness and strength from inside out in order to stimulate the whole neuro-endocrine system. Deeper breathing practices can help to prevent lower back pain as well as pelvic instability. Relaxation cultivates calm, balanced energy promoting a sense of vitality & inner peace. Classes will be taught by Liese van Dam – Birthlight Well Woman yogateacher. Every first Friday of the month class will be taught by Daniela Gfeler with a special focus on Iyengar style Well Woman.

The Yin-flow yoga class has a gentle pace in which the deep Yin Yoga stretches are alternated with strengthening, revitalizing and more active yoga poses. Each class starts with a breathing practice and a gentle warm-up, followed by some more strength building poses in combination with Yin Yoga poses and ending with relaxation. The Yin-flow class is a very nice way to start your day afresh, stretched and in touch with yourself.

Yoga Moves also offers Yin Yoga. Yin yoga is a specific style of yoga where you move into long held poses, releasing muscular tension, open deeply into your joints and allowing resistance to melt. Delicious. Not easy. Did I mention delicious?

Experientially, the practice is characterized by passive asana held for several minutes each. The practice is called yin, as opposed to yang, because it corresponds with yin attributes such as substance (as opposed to activity), passive posturing (as opposed to active movement), cold (as opposed to hot) and other such qualities. It has been differentiated from "yang" yoga (warm, moving-vinyasa-based) since yin yoga is softer and less aggressive.

These classes are great for everyone – but beginners can feel comfortable starting here. We keep it simple but deep. So everyone will find something in these back to basics classes.

This class is an eclectic blend of dance, yoga, Pilates, Feldenkrais, Body Mind Centering, Authentic Movement and other body-mind-spirit practices gathered together and refined since 1994 by Suzan (an expressive arts therapist with specialization in dance/movement) into a class which covers many needs in a seamless tapestry of non-judgment, mutual support, and FUN. Most classes begin with breathwork and lying on the floor to get out of the (thinking) head and into the body, which increases awareness for the rest of the class (and beyond). Gradual layers of core work, and expressive movement are added in until everyone is warm and energized. In most of the classes there is a section of guided movement meditation, giving space for personal expression while exploring balance, flexibility, and fluidity/grace. Appropriate music is used throughout (most of) the class. Various descriptions of the experience  are:  yoga/meditation for people with ADHD;  stimulating yet calming at the same time; essential skills for life; and dance/yoga for klutzes. There is a basic framework for the classes, within which each one is different.
