Mats:
Yoga Mats are designed to help you feel more secure when you are working in standing postures and to give some cushioning when in sitting or lying down postures. Some are more sticky than others, some will be slippery when wet (like when you sweat) and others are more firm for your bones!
Most (even the organic ones) have some properties where the mat is not really very good for the environment when tossed out. So buy a good one that will last and use it a long time. Then recycle it somehow (use it under a rug!)

When you buy a yoga mat - ask yourself the following:

  • How much comfort & support does it have?
  • How durable is it? Longevity?
  • How much slipresistance does it have?
  • How travelfriendly is it?
  • How ecofriendly is it?

Bricks:
The bricks are a trick that Iyengar made popular - you can use the bricks so many ways! You can: sit on them, lean on them, make the ground come up to you in standing poses, balance them on your head, use under your hands in downward dog, use them to achieve postures like backbending or balance on top for balance poses! A MUSTHAVE.

Belts:
Belts are also fantastic help to open shoulders and to help hold the arms back in shoulderstand or other poses. You can also use a belt to keep the legs together in longer held postures.
