As we study and practice yoga, we are learning to inhabit our bodies, hearts and minds in an authentic way.  Naturally, our daily yoga practice becomes the environment where we restore and enhance our energy, but it can also serve as the vehicle for acknowledging and opening to patterns of resistance that we habitually struggle with or have split off from in ourselves. These emotional afflictions obscure our compassionate awareness and are the source of our suffering. It is essential that we bring them onto the yogic path and work with them skillfully.

In this workshop we will join with Sarah to engage in both a meditation session as well as a balanced asana practice of Yin (long floor poses which balance the meridian system) and Yang (a slow alignment based flow), encouraging an inner atmosphere of embodied ease and alertness. After our asana session we will engage in compassion practices and visualizations that can help us forge a conscious relationship with our deeper values and the patterns that block their expression. When focused on regularly, these practices can help us to relax into a natural state of openness and clarity.

This workshop is appropriate for anyone with at least 2 years of a committed yoga practice and those who are also strongly interested in meditative awareness.

If you are not familiar with the Yin practice and Mindfulness meditation please read Sarah’s book Insight Yoga and see her dvd Insight Yoga before the workshop. (Can order from Yoga Moves book shop - send us an email!)

Teacher Biography:

Sarah Powers

Sarah Powers began teaching in 1987. She is the founder and author of Insight Yoga, which interweaves the insights and practices of Yoga, Buddhism, Chinese medicine, and Transpersonal Psychology into an integral practice to enliven the body, heart and mind. Her yoga style blends both a Yin sequence of floor poses to enhance the meridian and organ systems, combined with an alignment-based slow flow or Yang practice, influenced by Viniyoga, Ashtanga, and Iyengar teachings. Sarah feels that enlivening the physical and pranic bodies, as well as learning to open to our emotional difficulties is paramount for preparing one to deepen and nourish insights into one's essential nature--a natural state of awareness. She draws from her studies in Transpersonal Psychology, as well as her in-depth training in the Vipassana, Tantric and Dzogchen practices of Buddhism. Her main teachers are Tsoknyi Rinpoche, Jennifer Welwood, Lama Tsultrim Allione, and Lama Pema Dorje.

Sarah and her husband Ty Powers live in the San Francisco bay area and have created the Insight Yoga Institute which offers 725 hour trainings with other renowned teachers blending yoga, buddhism and psychology (www.insightyogainstitute.com). She is also co-founder of Metta Journeys (www.mettajourneys.com), a service oriented organization that offers yoga retreats internationally to help women and children in developing countries. Sarah is the author of the book Insight Yoga (Shambhala Publications). To learn more about her see her dvds Insight Yoga or Yin and Vinyasa and go to www.sarahpowers.com.
