25 years of Yoga Moves. One evening together.
By Maurice Eikmans
Almost 25 years. That’s how much time passed between my first and my second yoga class. Apparently, after that first class, I wasn’t ready yet. I didn’t really understand what yoga did to me, or what I was supposed to do with it. So I left it there.
Then, in 2018, I walked into a yoga studio again. I had signed up for a two-hour introduction and when they asked me why I wanted to practise yoga, I wrote down one word: flexibility. In my head, I meant my body. I was running a lot, I felt stiff and yoga seemed like a sensible thing to try. Looking back, I think my heart was talking about a different kind of flexibility. Life was full. Work, family, responsibilities, expectations. Always doing, solving and moving on to the next thing. Somewhere along the way, some of the lightness had disappeared.
That two-hour introduction became one class a week. Then two. Then three. I found teachers who made me curious, challenged me and took me beyond the physical practice. I became a little more flexible, but not just in my hamstrings. A little lighter, a little kinder and a little better at letting things go. Eventually I wanted to understand more. Then I wanted to teach.
Yoga became a much bigger part of my life than I could ever have imagined when I wrote down that one word: flexibility.
Funny how things work out. Because this year, Yoga Moves turns 25.
And I imagine thousands of Yoga Moves stories started with something equally small. Someone opens the door, takes off their shoes and finds a mat. Maybe it’s their first yoga class ever. Maybe a friend convinced them to come. Maybe they look around and wonder: Am I flexible enough for this? Then the teacher starts the class. You never know where it might lead.
When I think about 25 years of Yoga Moves, I don’t really think about the thousands of classes, workshops, Teacher Trainings or studios. I think about the people. The teachers who shared their knowledge and energy. Students who came for one class and somehow stayed for years. People who met at Yoga Moves and became friends. People who became teachers themselves. People who moved away and came back. People we haven’t seen for years, but whose faces we still remember. And people who are only just walking through our doors today.
That is what we want to celebrate on Saturday 21 November.
THE CELEBRATION
For one evening, we’re taking over LEEN in Utrecht. Not for a yoga class, and definitely not for a formal anniversary evening where you sit quietly while we tell you how wonderful the past 25 years have been. That wouldn’t feel very Yoga Moves. We want an evening that feels like us with music, stories, memories, food, drinks, familiar faces, new connections and a few surprises. We’ll look back, of course. Twenty-five years deserves at least a little looking back. But mostly, we want to enjoy being together.
Come with the people you practise with every week. Reconnect with someone you haven’t seen for years. Bring a friend. Or simply come by yourself. You won’t be alone for long.
Maybe we haven’t seen you for a while.
Maybe your Yoga Moves years were 2003, 2008 or 2015.
Maybe you did a Teacher Training with us and life took you somewhere else.
Maybe you used to practise three times a week and somehow three weeks became three months, and three months became three years.
Maybe you’ve been coming every week for eight, twelve or more than twenty years.
Maybe you teach with us now, work or once worked behind the scenes
Maybe you bought your first Starter Card this month.
It really doesn’t matter. If Yoga Moves has been part of your life — for 25 years, 25 weeks or just a few classes — you are part of this story too. And we would really love to see you on 21 November.
