Yoga for Cesarean Recovery

A Birthlight CPD Day:
Continuing Professional Development

With Kirsteen Ruffell

Enhance your support of women after birth and deepen your understanding with specific practices aimed at restoring integrity after a cesarean.

As the World Health Organisation states "In the last decades, the proportion of birth by caesarean section has increased in an unprecedented way. This is due to many reasons, which may be country- and culture-specific." Following a cesarean birth women often report feeling numb or disconnected around or below their scar on several levels- physical, emotional and energetically. The visible scar after a cesarean will usually be horizontal about 10 to 20cm long, just below the bikini line. However, there are many layers of tissue beneath to heal and regain elasticity and energetic health. Even old scar tissue can benefit from the practices on this CPD.

This day will include self-massage of the Cesarean scar with breath and awareness, based on anatomy. Three sequences offer both general and specific resources for different scars and stages of healing, to prevent or alleviate adhesions. There will be guided self practice and debrief. This is followed by an original Birthlight set of yoga micro-movements to support long term core strength, blood circulation and innervation after a C section. Also included are selected yoga resources to address the energetic and emotional aspects of C sections (use of sound, mantra, affirmations, mudra and heart-womb meditation).

Helping women bring subtle body wellness and yoga wisdom into daily life that support body, mind and spirit… in both the life of the mom and with their new baby.

Who this CPD is for:

Yoga teachers and other professionals working with postnatal women can add to their Postnatal yoga repertoire by adding these specialist practices to enhance deep physical and emotional healing through all the tissue layers. Women and teachers wanting to work with their own scar are welcome too.
