Yoga for Women: Managing Menopause with Care

With Kirsteen Ruffell

Managing Menopause with Care seeks to educate and empower you to embrace menopause as an opportunity for self-growth.

Menopause is one of the big transformative phases of women’s lives that may leave them struggling with their yoga practice as well as their everyday lives and causing them to re-evaluate their sense of self and priorities for self care.

Join us to experience & understand how the Birthlight yoga approach and practices can help women to adapt more easily to the changes: whether you are an experienced yogini or new to yoga.

Whether you are pre/peri or postmenopausal this course will give you resources to take away. Whether you have opted for hormone replacement therapy or have not had any of the common symptoms of menopause this day is aimed at supporting your balance, introspection and vital energy through this important gateway.

You Will Explore:

  • The physiology of the menopause as a process that ends women’s reproductive cycle but that can help them renew themselves in their lifecycle, whether they are mothers or not.

  • Yoga Asanas for alignment, grounding and centring through physical changes: strengthening, bone-building and stamina-creating practices.

  • Yoga breathing practices that help regulate hormonal fluctuations and promote balance

  • Mini Yoga Sequences to cope with fatigue, adrenal depletion, hot flashes and insomnia

  • Pelvic and self-integrity (pelvic floor, lower chakras and the Hara life-centre) with yoga

  • Lesser known yoga practices to engage with emotions and access calm inner strength: transforming anger and grief with heart connection

  • Playful and creative flow practice to enliven Shakti – the hub of primordial feminine creative energy in women’s lives – during the perimenopause years.

  • Pathways to relaxation to soothe the nervous system, some quick easy practices and a deeper relaxation in restorative poses.

  • Opportunities to share with other women about the experience of the perimenopause in an honest and non-judgemental environment.

No one really knows what causes hot flashes, although theories abound. Some say the hypothalamus plays an important role; another possibility is that the hormonal fluctuations in the body irritate the blood vessels and nerve endings, causing the vessels to overdilate and producing a hot, flushed feeling. Most researchers (as well as many menopausal women) agree that stress, fatigue, and intense periods of activity tend to intensify these episodes.
