THERAPEUTIC WISDOM OF YOGA and Its Role in Your Teaching | ONLINE COURSE

Anatomy, Physiology & Intelligent Alignment
With Doug Keller

Doug came to teach hatha yoga by way of meditation and years of academic study: philosophy, both western and eastern approaches spirituality, anatomy, movement and yoga.

His depth, intelligence and accessibility for translating hard concepts into digestible ones is profound.

This module taught by Doug Keller puts modern understanding of the body in traditional ‘yoga’ terms for a deeper appreciation of the practice, and to inspire students to explore the purposes and benefits of yoga for health, fitness, and its therapeutic benefits with understanding and confidence.

The content of this training covers:

    • Principles of joint health, and how a focus on joint mobility is the first step toward students improving their strength and flexibility, as well as overcoming joint pain.

    • the myofascial lines governing muscles and joints introduced by Tom Myers, as applied to concepts of prana and of asana. This will clarify and enhance your understanding of how to teach and sequence the practice for therapeutic benefit to your students.

    • Common obstacles to practice that limit progress, common injuries and their causes, and the common therapeutic problems that bring students to yoga.

This approach will include:

    • Injury prevention: how to work safely with joints such as the knees, wrists and shoulders, hips and sacroiliac joints.

    • Understanding the connections between muscles along myofascial lines, which makes clear the logic and purpose of sequencing, as well as the deep wisdom of the asanas themselves.

    • Understanding fundamental functional movement patterns which are supported and improved through asana practice for greater health and freedom from pain.

    • Principles by which teachers can assess students’ posture and movement patterns, for the purpose of understanding their pain patterns, and for being able to provide direction through recommendations and guidance for practice.

    • Principles of breath in asana practice, and approaches to practice for improving breath patterns, with some exploration of the role of the Vagus nerve and breath’s role in relaxation & resilience.

Join Doug from anywhere in the world and discover many tips and insights into practicing yoga. This course will start in May (4 hours a day x 3 days) and end in June (2 half days). You will also enjoy some on-demand classes to help you integrate the material.

The ‘Big Picture’ of the
Therapeutic Wisdom of Yoga

Joint Health in the Lower Body, and the Key Role that Joint Movement Plays in Regulating Muscle Tone

The yogic terminology of the 'Vayus' (functions of Prana) describe what, in modern terms, we understand to be the Autonomic Nervous System, which governs our vital functions, pain management, and cognitive as well as physical health, and regulates inflammatory conditions in the body.

Understanding the Vayus helps us to bring together movement, breath, knowledge, and intention to optimize the benefits of the poses and breath awareness in terms of range of motion, strength and flexibility, pain management, reduction of inflammatory conditions, stress management and self-regulation of the nervous system, cognitive health and clarity, and more.

This 'Big Picture' is immediately put to practical use in understanding the dimensions of asana practice for increased well-being, as applied in the following topics:

Principles of Asana — Myofascial Lines as Maps for Movement

The foundation for our understanding of the therapeutic wisdom of asana practice will be the myofascial lines or ‘sutras’ that govern functional movement as well as posture.

These provide the basis for postural assessment to understand pain patterns, as well as a logic for sequencing a practice to refine functional movement and improve postural patterns, for adjusting poses, and for avoiding injuries.

Particular focus will be on hamstring health and function, and what to do with hamstring injuries, as well as muscular actions that support mobility in the sacroiliac joints while providing stability to those joints.

The Health of the Spine:

For safe and productive yoga, attention needs to be paid to the health of the spine as supported by yoga practice — with proper consideration of safe spinal extension, flexion, and twisting, and the related myofascial lines involved in asana practice that maintains the health of the spine.

Our treatment of the sacroiliac joint continues in this topic, with the focus shifting to freedom and stability in the spine and torso, and includes common pain problems such as low back pain, sciatica, and also the impact of the spine upon breathing patterns, as well as the impact of spinal movements in asana upon gut health

The Upper Body: Health and Movement of the Shoulders (and Neck) as well as Wrist Health

The health of the spine and neck, as well as breathing patterns, is greatly impacted by issues surrounding the shoulders. We will go into detail on the fundamentals of maintaining shoulder mobility and health, especially as it impacts posture, the health of the spine, and the breath.

This will include consideration of the myofascial lines or sutras governing the shoulders, as well as the alignment and action necessary for good ‘joint play’ in the shoulders that is necessary to avoid inflammatory conditions and injuries.

These provide guidance for sequencing as well as manageable shoulder routines that increase strength, stability, and flexibility, and which provide clear guidance for adjusting the shoulders in a wide range of poses.

By looking at the ‘big picture’ of the shoulders, we can improve wrist and hand function, and examine wrist and elbow problems and limitations that so often present problems for practice.

YACEP: 25 hrs of Continuing Education

Doug connects the science of anatomy and physiology to the ancient wisdom of yoga. It maken it all so logic what we experience. I even use his teachings in my medical practice.

Ik vond de workshops fantastisch. De dagen zitten tjokvol met kennis die ik direct kan gebruiken in mijn lessen maar ook voor mijn eigen practice...het een fijne combinatie is tussen theorie en praktijk...
